Homemade Fruit and Vegetable Wash

Want to sanitize your fruit and vegetables before you eat them? Especially if you do not buy organic food, it’s a really good idea to wash your tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, and all fruits and veggies that you do not peal.

Ingredients:

  • White vinegar or apple cider vinegar
  • Water
  • Empty Spray Bottle (you can get these at The Dollar Store, Wal-Mart, Target, or any local organic store)

For Hard-Skinned Fruits and Veggies:

  1. Fill a spray bottle with 1/2 cup vinegar and 1/2 cup water.
  2. Spray onto fruits and veggies.
  3. Rub in.
  4. Rinse.

For Soft-Skinned Fruits and Veggies:

  1. Fill a bowl with 1 cup vinegar and 1 cup water.
  2. Soak your fruits and veggies in the bowl for 1-2 minutes.
  3. Rinse.

Why does this work? Vinegar contains acetic acid which kills bacteria, mold, germs and dissolves gunk and residue.

I have been using this spray on my cutting boards as well before I cut the fruit. Although the cutting boards have been through the dishwasher, I like sanitizing them one more time before I cut fruit or veggies. It’s a totally safe and natural way to sanitize and disinfect! Like I always say, if you can eat it, you can clean with it!

Update: (April 11, 2014) I have been living in Mexico for three months and I have to be really careful about cleaning fruits and veggies before I eat them because of the bad water. So I poured a bottle of Apple Cider Vinegar into a spray bottle and then diluted it with pure/clean/drinking water (which is normal faucet water in the states). I spray it on all my veggies and then rinse them with good water and I have never gotten sick. The people gave me some fruit and veggie cleaning drops to use when cooking, but of course they are full of chemicals! I didn’t want to put more chemicals on my food, which will then go into my body. I seriously love my vinegar fruit/veggie wash and it’s so cheap and so healthy!
